Notes from Association Meeting held on January 27, 2007 2:00- 4:00 PM at Khima Bhauju's house (Note-taker: Bibin Shakya) Attendees: Alok Bibin Kabi Raj Mandhoj (aka Rai dai) Moti Nandu Naresh (partly) Pradeep Raju Roshan Uddhav (partly)
Those attending the meeting went over the survey results and what they meant to the association. It was collectively agreed that the results were very positive overall. Kudos for people who participated in the survey and Alok for setting up the system!
The participants also briefly discussed the bylaws in general but did not go over Motis draft. It was mentioned that it would be more meaningful if we register our association by ourselves than by lawyers. Some were willing to devote the time to register!
Action Items:
Moti and Arjun to come up with a draft of bylaws. Of course, we all can explore what it should be. Please bring your ideas.
Arjun and Bibin to send bylaws related links.
Nandu to make a reservation at Kukui plaza for Sat, Feb 3 (2-4pm).

Online Survey A brief online survey was conducted to collect thoughts about the formation of Nepalese Association of Hawaii. The survey was open from January 12 to january 19, 2006. Highlights of the survey outcome: • Twenty-two respondents participated in the survey • Eighteen out of twenty-two said that they support the idea of having a formal organization of Nepalese in Hawaii!! • The majority visualize the organization to be a simple and small one – at least for the time being • $25 seems to be the maximum amount the respondents are willing to contribute annually to the organization • We can expect up to 10 hours/month of volunteer time from the members • Three respondents have stated that they are interested to serve on the govening body. Although 10 respondents are found not to be interested in being on the governing body, many from the 9 respondents who chose “don’t know” will probably join in the governing body. Therefore, we should have enough members interested to be in the executive committee(s). As many as thirteen respondents said that the term of the executive committee should be 1 year, 6 respondents said 2 years and 3 said that it should not change.
Notes from the Association Meeting held on 12/16/2006 (Notetaker/writer: Deepak Neupane) The gathering was an attempt to discuss the formation of a Nepali Association in Honolulu. Following people attended:
Bibin Shakya Deepak Neupane/Namrata Gurung Krishna Lamichhane Pradeep Pant Raju and Surya Laxmi Maharjan Arjun and Mandira Aryal Roshan Manandhar Moti Chapagain Naresh Pradhan Mana Dhwoj Rai Yadav Thapa
Basic discussion was about how to go about forming an association and what are the next steps. Though not everyone could attend the meeting, the general sentiment was that, at least in the beginning, someone has to take the initiative to get things started and that we shouldn't wait for everyone to get together to agree on what this association should look like.
Based on that sentiment, I have volunteered to research the charter and bylaws of similar other associations. I'll also be calling the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) for the requirements to of the non-profit organization.
A lot of issues will have to discussed and decisions made between now and when we will be ready to register the association. This will need help from everyone, and I mean EVERYONE. To start with we need a name for the organization. We need to develop its vision and mission statement, choose the governing body, agree on the charter and bylaws and so on and so forth. The road forward will be difficult, but meaningful, I hope.
Since it will never be possible to get everyone together, I am suggesting that we use email to communicate and participate. I know there are many of you out there who think forming an association is a terrific idea and think that someone else is working on it and you don't need to be involved. Please don't just be a passive supported, please get actively involved. We need everyone's opinion and ideas and support.
That said, let us keep this conversation going by emailing our ideas on issues I have outlined above.
I do not have email addresses of everyone, so please forward this to those who are not listed on the address line above.
May be our first task is to create an all inclusive email database. Can someone volunteer for that?
Also, communication will be much easier if we can start even a temporary web page. Any volunteers for that!
Those in attendance on 12/16/2006, please add to this note if I inadvertently left out some of the stuff we had discussed.
